To kick off into the New Year, Highgrade brings you a new edition of its Various Artists compilation. This time we focus on two surprising collaborations from the middle of Berlin’s club circuit who seem to follow the same aim with different methods: Clique artist daniel.fx joins up with one of Highgrade´s main producers Todd Bodine for a deadpan minimal house groover, as well as the massive and challenging monster track by Guido Schneider from Pokerflat together with OSTGUT/Panorama barimpresario DJ Andre Galuzzi - a demanding and enthusing track just perfect to bring on the perfect headrush on the legendary Ostgut floor as well as everywhere else!

Todd always brings a swinging groove that works for both minimal and house DJs and this release definitely delivers the doughnuts.

Side A, “Secret Edge” will turn any stale room fresh and get everyone’s toes tapping and asses wiggling. It’s got elements of Detroit, Chicago, and Berlin all wound up into a really nice party starter. You can never underestimate a fun grooving track that’s easy to mix and fun to dance to.

Side B, “Back to Back” is a submariner’s dream with bubbling water sounds floating and popping over a low funk groove. This is the track for when you want to take it down a notch without losing any dance-floor magic. It’s a real dreamy affair with a fat bottom end.

Two of San Francisco’s hottest DJs, Monty Luke and Tasho bring us their very first release, a low down paranoid techno groove to keep you biting your nails and shaking your ass. Monty Luke was handpicked by Carl Craig as a resident of Craig’s Demon Days tour while Tasho is a very respected resident of San Francisco’s incredible Stompy parties. Both have been an integral part of the San Francisco dance scene for well over 10 years. “Paranoid” takes its lead from old skool acid funk but takes us one step further into the future. Tasho’s heavy techno bassline sits directly in the pocket and Monty Luke’s twisted nervous funk vocal make this an irresistible dance floor nerve splitter. Top Berlin producer, Todd Bodine (Tresor, Highgrade, Immigrant) rocks the remix adding the necessary bumpy tweaks and hot precision to make a great track even more freaky. We might see more of Todd on mothership in the future!

OK no rest for the wicked, time for another installment of Immigrant machine funk…this time it’s Todd Bodine’s first solo EP for Immigrant Records, “The Spring EP” (IMM029). Berliner Bodine has been making a name for himself on the international house and techno scene since 2001 with releases on high quality imprints such as Morris Audio, Highgrade, Triebstoff and of course the mighty Tresor. A personal favourite artist of ours for a long time now we are proud to finally present the King of the Groove. On remix duty we pass the baton to Clever Music head honcho and all round nice guy Mark-Henning (Clever, Freude Am Tanzen, Einmaleins, Clever).

A1 – Spring. The brooding sub bass and tight percussion hook you in from the off whilst Todd’s trademark bleeps, blips and blops, grow into perfectly timed drops. All the groove you need to kick things off but also just enough of the impact and power you need for peak time mayhem too!

A2 – Wake Up. Todd slows it down a little for Wake Up, the funk we’ve come to expect is still in full effect but the darker more haunting melody cheats you into thinking this is going to be a slow burner. Then comes the break. Get with it this is no time for snoozing!

B1 – Wake Up (Mark-Henning Remix). The Gooner himself takes on Todd’s parts for the remix action here. Mark roughens up the percussion and gives us a slightly more gruff bassline for his version whilst still managing to maintain tight dancefloor appeal. The warped melodies, chopped up vocals and drak grunts add to making this a more heady affair than the original.

Long before Brian Eno coined the new musical term „ambient“ with the release of his „discreet music“ series in the late 1970’s and 1980’s, this type of slow, rhythmic, repetitive, trance-like electronic music had already taken infant form through the dynamic experiments lead by pioneering innovators on the North American and European continents. One only needs to listen to early Terry Riley or Steve Reich to get the point. The genre has expanded in widened frontiers that now include music from all over the world, mixed, sampled and reproduced electronically for the low-key listener.

Over the years, Tresor artists have now and then captured this style with a single track on an album, often unnoticed by our techno fans but nevertheless an important addition to the uniqueness of the family of electronic music composers on the Tresor label. Therefore we have assembled a collection of these slow, atmospheric tracks from various Tresor releases, featuring some of our most distinguished artists such as Jeff Mills, DJ T-1000, Surgeon, Drexciya, Pacou, Todd Bodine and many more. Broadcasting timeless, route one techno from the heart of Berlin since 1996, Cabinet records has come to epitomise the rough underground sound of a city like few others. Now, with this excellent compilation package, Plus 8 has seen fit to set this essential contribution to electronic dance music in stone.
Indeed, over the last decade the relationship between the labels has come full circle, making the release of this retrospective package all the more timely. Back in the days, the Plus 8 affiliated IntelliNET Distribution pressed and distributed the very first Cabinet releases to the world. 10 years later, Richie Hawtin’s relentless search for the perfect beat still leads him back to the rare Cabinet archive for inspiration, quality and pure expression of the form.
When you listen to this distinctive, stripped down sound, forged by label founder Daniel Paul, DJ Zky and DJ Trike among others, it’s clear to see why. Not only do their productions contain explosive energy and a generous helping of phuture funk but there’s also a spontaneous, live vibe captured here. The tracks evolve effortlessly, with each new idea reaching its logical conclusion through a mesh of 909 beats, warm
analogue basslines and feverish hi hat patterns – a knack that’s all too conspicuous by its absence nowadays.
The package appears in two 12” double pack formats, the first focusing on the early years with classics from Compass and Cab drivers like the acid-tinged Gliding and the infectious shuffle and bass groove of Elwico. The second contains a selection of unreleased gems like Horseshoe’s freakin’ 303 inspired Bassline and the tribal drift of Cab driver’s Selbstauslöser. The second vinyl release will be accompanied by a
comprehensive double CD that delves further into the Cabinet back catalogue, creating an irresistible 21 track salute to Berlin techno - simply speaking, it’s a must for the purist.
To the uninitiated, it’s the chance to finally pin down some of those anonymous moments that so often wash over the dance floor, familiar yet always out of reach – when the warmth of the human spirit melts the cold shell of technology and momentarily makes perfect sense of everything past, present and future.

A1. Immigrant is proud to welcome “Todd Bodine” (Tresor/Highgrade) to the label for his debut appearance. Todd twists the track into a bubbling housey groover, that jacks along until the synthy bassline punches in and builds, and BUILDS, and BUILDS before dropping you back down to get sweaty! A2. Next up is “Alland Byallo” (Kontrol/Kvadrat Produkt/Nightlight Music) who’s snare driven rattler builds to a massive crescendo not for the faint hearted. Keeping the original stabs in tact this mix will see some peak time action for sure. D1. New kid on the block “Barem” (Minus/Foundsound) strips the track back as far as it can possibly go, concentrating on a hypnotic deep bass line and sparse snappy snares Barem’s dropping a dark room bomb, already receiving plays from one Richie Hawtin. Finally on D2. “Mariel Ito” (aka Maetrik) delivers us his reformation. A fat electro mix, using thick drums and much of the original bass line, this coupled with vocoder snippets provide us a with a futuristic track that will appeal to fans of people such as Anthony Rother and Silicon Scally …dope!

The vivisection of contemporary dance music has almost come to an end. The whiff of minimal music makes everybody wave aside at the moment when suddenly, it is him coming up with this precious, straight and highly euphoric track. We are talking about Todd Bodine, the good old hand at crackling tunes. He has pimped his sound and the result is a sporty two-door ride: equipped with a slim waistline and the strong and well-surfing calves of a sprinter, his naughty, digital sounds are surfing on top of the analogue wave, spiced a most elegant fine-tuning, yet incredibly lusty. With this new Treibstoff 12Iinch release, the well-disposed audience will get wonderfully rasterised rumbling sounds that congenially continue with the Cologne-based label´s fresh tradition: as minimal as possible and as cheeky as necessary. B1: Alexei Meshkov aka Nooncat with one of his typical dry and therefore crystal production; although Alexei choose to go for a more minimal sound than usual this tune is perfect for big dance-floors!!!

Eine auf den ersten Blick fast unscheinbare EP die aber für mich definitiv zu denen gehören wird, die mich das ganze Jahr begleiten werden. Tracks von Todd Bodine, Phil Sumpf, Nonocat und Touane, die es allesamt schaffen eine so dichte und leichte Athmosphäre zu erzeugen, dass man sie jedes mal wieder aufs neue endtecken kann. Sehr verspielte aber auf dem Dancefloor dennoch kickende Grooves mit vielen kleinen Ausrutschern und Überraschungen und magischen Melodien, die aber eben alles andere als direkt sind. Perfekte Grooves die die Zeit überdauern werden.

The world of electronic music only grows wider and more complex thanks to composers like Todd Bodine. The Berlin-based producer who is artistically inclined towards minimal sounds recorded his debut album for Tresor in 2005. The first outtakes for vinyl were already released in May 2005 (Tresor.210 "Life Signs") and October 2005 (Tresor.217 "Particles") to afford a preview of the CD album release in January 2006. And here it is: a full-length documentation of Todd Bodine's version of electronica exploring a unique range of moods, tastes, feelings, polarities and textures.

Bodine's distintive studio work excels on his Tresor debut album: just listen to the sexy bass rhythms and bleeped sensuality in "Roommate", "Vanish" and "Mimic". On the other hand, in the stark track "Femunden" the dub takes charge and gives hyperspace a funky downsize, until you give up trying to identify with the sounds and just accept the seductive beat. Lushness even creeps up 'side the head (especially with headphones) in "Enemies Behind" and you're never far from the planetary elements that make up Todd Bodine's rich blend of electro nujazz, techfunk and crossover fusion, that snarls its sonic pulse into your tapping foot or swinging hips. The exploration undertaken here (check out the sci-fi soundtrack quality in the funk machinery of "No Answer") ultimately creates a refreshingly adult yet melancholic ambience that sometimes holds the listener spellbound, and other times leads the way straight to the dance floor. Just as in the sublime track "The Way Back", Todd's new Tresor album aurally steers its way through the sphere that makes up his version of electronic music constructivism, while leaving familiar traces of dance magic along the way for a safe return trip.

If Bodine´s talent was not evident enough with his releases on Highgrade, Morris Audio Citysport, Tongut or SubStatic Records, then it certainly surfaces now with "Surfaces" – a minimal masterpiece.

Since the original track ended up as a small insiders tip with massiv airplay by lots of jocks, we decided to give it another go with two of our allstars plus one of the of last season big hits (Samim and Michal - Turningspork) as remixers. Sanim (here without his partner Michael) opens up the race with a straight-to-the-top rocket, with his deep journey to ecstasy giving birth to a totally spaced out and hypnotic remix, cool as fuck, while Format b do their typical techhouse madness, combining technoverdose with FAT 2 step basslines and more. Dark und acidic der erste Track dieser EP, den er zusammen mit Ludwig Coenen produziert hat. Treibend und willenlos geht es immer weiter hinein in den Blick der nur noch schwarz wie die Nacht sieht. Auf der Rückseite minimaler in den Untertönen, bleepiger und noch pulsierender ohne dass das treibende Moment, das irgendwie die zentrale Stelle dieser Tracks ist, verloren geht. Drei sehr schöne Skizzen auf dem Weg zum nächsten Sound von Todd Bodine, von dem dieses Jahr noch ein Album bei Tresor folgt.

Mit einer Doppel 12" feiern sie die ersten 25 Releases und hier zeigt sich auf 8 Tracks, dass man mit Highgrade immer rechnen muss, denn vom ersten Track (Sven Bredes Deephouseminimalmonster "Fenster") an geht es hier vor allem auch um eine Breite an Sounds und man enthält sich der Retrostimme nicht nur mit dem clickernd feinen Sound von Reynold und Todd Bodine, sondern auch alle anderen (Tom Clark, Format:B, James Flavour, Dub Taylor, Dialogue) scheinen ihre besten frischesten Tracks rausgekramt zu haben, um ein Statement für leichte Grooves und frischen Housesound ohne Zwang zum Rave zu machen. Sehr schöne Compilation.

Coinciding with the 13th anniversary of Tresor Club comes the 12th entry in our significant Tresor Compilation series: „Illumination“. Distinctive and unique: nearly all in the roster of excellent tracks have been delivered as previously unreleased and exclusive for the compilation.

This is certainly a potent mix of club and minimal sounds from both high-profile, long-standing Tresor artists as well as original works from a few of our newer, blazing crew members. On the 12“ version Joey Beltram’s „A Universal Mind“ kicks in, ahead of the summer 04 release of his maxi „The Beyonder“ (Tresor.213).

Alumni artists Pacou („Spark 2 Fire“ – from his maxi „Last Man Standing“ Tresor.209 – and „Optimistic“, separate tracks on CD and vinyl respectively), The Advent („Replay“), and Dave Tarrida („Boot It Up“), have collectively designed works that can only be defined as the progressing sound of Tresor Underground: rich in intensity yet minimal and uncluttered; energy unleashed for tweaking ears. Leo Laker attacks once again (vinyl version only) with the power track „Don’t Push Me“ (no problem Leo). Regis’ remix of Loktibrada’s „Until“ thunders with equal layers of treble and bass that compliment the buzz-tech and freaky, percussive swing of Bill Youngman’s „Connection Circuit“. Stewart Walker’s melodic and dramatic „Nailbiting Conclusion“ continues in his sublime ’adult techno’ trend (CD only)...

Drei neue Track von Todd Bodine, der es mal wieder schafft so lässig loszurollen, dass man glaubt, es bräuchte sich eigentlich gar nichts mehr tun und wäre schon perfekt, aber dann erfindet er immer wieder neue überraschende Wege Dubs einzuflechten, mit den Basslines kurz auszubrechen oder einfach nur knapp und verspielt in den Breaks zu sein, dass jeder Track zu einem Ausnahmezustand wird. Wer die erste EP von ihm gut fand, wird diese hier wie einen Schatz hüten.

Das Schweizer Label Tongut krönt seine Hochphase mit einer Compilation, die den Spielraum zwischen Minimal- und Tech-House gekonnt auslotet und mal eben so eine Sammlung toller Minimal-Perlen aus dem Ärmel schüttelt. Falko Brocksieper verknotet im ersten Track pluckernde Synthie-Sounds mit einer sich elegant auf und nieder schwingenden Bassline und einem trocken rockenden Beat zu einer rasanten Mischung, während Todd Bodine im zweiten Track aus analogen Basis-Elementen und weichen Chords einen eher lässigen Groove bastelt, der am besten niemals aufhören sollte und einen sanft zum tief in minimaler Funkyness schürfenden Apoll transportiert. Gefolgt von Dialogues flott hüpfenden "drop your glowstick" und Kazoo, der einem mit "new breath" den Atem verschlägt und über druckvollem Beat die Flächen im Raum vor und zurük warped, dass ein Neuronen-Sauger hier seine wahre Freude hätte. Die restlichen Tracks von Novatek, René Breitbarth und Jeff Milligan halten Intensität und Frische und so bleibt nur Tongut eine sehr schöne Compilation zu attestieren und jedem zu gratulieren, der sich diese schöne Platte zulegt. Ein Muss.

Soopa-Fi steigen in diese Minicompilation mit soviel trockenem Preacherfunk ein, lassen das Pathos weit in die 80er zurückgreifen, als Electro irgendwie die einzige Art von Musik war, die Afros in Space und Ingenieure aus Europa unter einen Hut bringen konnte, ohne sich bemühen zu müssen, und stapfen trotzdem die Bassdrum tapfer mittendurch. Magnetic Base halten sich an die Schwerkraft der Augenlieder von Ragga und lassen im freien Fall dennoch eine Oldschooldiscobassline und NoNYFunk als Anker im extrem lässigen Groove. Dan Drastics "Play It Loud" führt uns dann erst mal auf den sicheren Boden der minimalen Houseästhetik mit leichten Dubkräuseln und sehr präziser Percussion zurück, putzt uns auf und bügelt uns klar, während Todd Bodine, süchtig nach Boombox einen Zengroove aus Wassertropfen und Klickern hinlegt, der einem den Boden unter den Füssen wegzieht, ohne dass man durchfällt, so dicht ist er. Genau genommen eine Platte mit nur Hits, von der plakativeren bis hin zur deepesten Variante.

Ich bin ja eh Fan von Todd Bodine Tracks, vor allem weil die Bleeps immer so gut passen und einen weit hinaustreiben, ohne dass sie sich bemühen müssten. Perfektioniert wird das hier auf "Let It Roll", das viel linearer als bei ihm sonst üblich, eben einfach genau das macht, was der Titel sagt, und dabei langsam und genüsslich das Zentrum verschiebt mit nur einem rollenden Beat, Bleeps und ein wenig Pianochords. "Radarstreams" verlegt sich dann wieder mehr auf Funk und subitle Hintergründe, lässt es knarren und leicht tribalartig durch die LFOs rocken und kommt am Ende rüber wie Michael Jackson in Dinosaurierverkleidung. "For Nothing" hat ein Vocal, das nach frühneunziger Techno klingt, aber Beats aus der besten Retrohouseschule, und schafft es so eine gewisse funkige Aggressivität mit verdammt smoothem Groove zu verbinden und am Ende gibt es noch seine Sicht auf den Sweet Excorcist Groove mit Detroitstrings bis zum umfallen. Perfekt.

Endlich der zweite Teil der Serie von 12" Compilations auf dem Label von Falko und Mia, und mit Tracks von Apoll, Todd Bodine (der ist aber auch überall), Falko und Goldfisch & der Dulz schon eine Wahl von Acts, die einem verspricht, dass hier nichts schief gehen kann und einen einiges überraschen dürfte. Apoll`s "G-Look" ist in der Bassline fast schon Drum and Bass und clickert dazu einen verdammt reduzierten Groove, der sich langsam aber beständig ins Hirn frisst wie eine strukturelle Variante von Acid. Todd Bodine hat hier endlich mal Platz, einen Sound auszutüfteln, der es wesentlich mehr als Richie selbst verdient hätte, die Nachfolge der ersten Plastikman anzutreten, und dabei auch noch die unwahrscheinlichen Klänge der ersten Sähkö EPs zu neuem Leben auf einem ungreifbaren Groove verhilft, der irgendwie verdammt rasant neue Wege öffnet. Falko klingelt mit einem straight bleepig angeknarzten Track den Dancefloor in den Oldschoolstakkatohimmel und zum Abschluss versetzen einen Goldfish & Der Dulz auf "Below" dann noch in die deepesten Sphären einer detroitig-angetupften Erinnerung. Sehr vielseitige EP von der jeder Track überhaupt nicht mehr wegzudenken ist.

Und noch mal drei Tracks mehr vom unermüdlichen Todd Bodine. Auf der A-Seite mit "Sequence" ein sehr smoother Housetrack mit ruhigem Groove aber verdammten Killerbleeps und einem langsam immer breiter werdenden Effekt von zeitloser Housedeepness nebst perfekten Harmoniewechseln. "The Module" ist ein für Bodine fast schon darker Dubtrack, bei dem die Beats aber dennoch solide breit pumpen und er sich viel Zeit gelassen hat, die einzelnen Elemente über viele Echoberge zu treiben, bevor sich langsam eine Art von latinangehauchtem Oldschooleffekt einstellt. Der letzte Track gibt Bodine dann wieder mal die Chance, alles auszukosten, was die Effekte so hergeben und in einem Slowmotiongroove so etwas wie die digitale dekonstruierte Version von Theo Parrish zu erfinden.

Obwohl ja nun wirklich schon lange genug dabei, habe ich bei jeder neuen Platte, die er in letzter Zeit macht, das Gefühl, dass sich Todd Bodine einfach so rasant entwickelt, dass man dabei zusehen kann wie in einem Zeitraffer. Diese neue EP für Highgrade kommt mit nur einem Track, der aber dafür ist so funky und durchdacht, so pumpend und bleepig, dass einem die Sprache wegbleibt. Das ist einfach digitaler Discofunk der besten Art, ohne auch nur einen Hauch von Oldschool. Präzisionsfunk. Die Remixe des Tracks kommen von Soopa-Fi, die mit Bongos und dezenterem Groove dem ganzen einen eher schwoofigen Touch geben und in eine Art von Breite überführen, die sehr, sehr viel Flow hat, während der Gebrüder Teichmann Remix natürlich knarziger und kompakter wirkt und sich eher das Herausprudelnde des Orginals vornimmt, um damit eine boxend-komprimierte Acidattacke zu fahren.

Todd Bodine aus Berlin rockt ja schon seit Jahren immer mal wieder mit einer Ausnahmeplatte, hier aber geht er gleich mehrere Schritte auf einmal und hat seinen Sound so perfektioniert, dass jeder Track irgendwie spielerisch wirkt. "System Of Society" bewegt sich über einen minimalen Basslinehousegroove hinein in eine swingend detroitige Ravenummer für die Relaxteren unter uns, "The Lost Girl From Mexico" ist ein bleepiger Pushertrack mit gespenstischen Sounds, der sogar Steve Bug Konkurrenz machen kann, "Datenexperiment" verzahnt einen dieser zur Zeit so oft gehörten klassischen Retro-Discogrooves mit einer hymnischen Detroitakkord-Houseästhetik und auf "Binary" geht es um die Zwischenräume von Techno aus den Urzeiten der 90er, Shufflebeats und warmen Housegrundlagen, so als hätte jemand plötzlich einen Weg gefunden, KMS mit Deephouse zu kreuzen. Sehr feine, vielseitige, immer überraschende Platte, die unerwartete Wendungen wirken lässt wie vom Wind hereingeweht.

Der zweite Teil der Serie mit Tracks der Headquarters Equipe zeigt, dass die Welt der konspirativen Technoidee immer noch ein Zentrum in Berlin hat, und featuret neben den beim letzten Mal schon rockenden Acts ein paar Neuzugänge wie Todd Bodine, Baeks, Kompjutr, Tollstoi, Subtronic, Aquaton und mehr, einige von ihnen finden sich auch auf Rampe D oder Ungleich wieder, anders unterwegs ist eigentlich vor allem Pacou, und hört man sich durch die beiden CDs durch, so entwickelt sich nach und nach immer mehr der Eindruck, dass frühe Detroiteinflüsse langsam verblassen und alles in Richtung immer mehr Clubmusik tendiert, die wirklich vom Tresor und dem eigenwilligen Sound dort unten gekennzeichnet ist. Reduziert meist auf die wesentlichen Grooves und nur einen Hauch Sound, irgendwie extrem trocken und rumpelnd ist diese Doppel-CD fast eher eine Vision, als Musik die man für sich zuhause auflegt. Außer vielleicht um sich zu erinnern.

Etwas irreführend, da es ja schon mal eine Compilation auf Vinyl gab, die soweit ich weiß genau so hieß, aber hier nun die erste Zusammenstellung der Labelgeschichte so far, mit einer Bonus CD voller Downtempo der gleichen Posse, die fast nur aus exklusiven Tracks besteht. Clark, Flavour, Bodine, Soopa-Fi, Dialogue, Interpol und Sven Brede jedenfalls rocken lässig durch ihr Repertoire, und wenn ihr die 12"es kennt, dann wisst ihr, dass hier eins der lässigsten Minimalhouselabel Berlins von Anfang bis Ende in einer solchen Perfektion kickt, dass man nichts davon auslassen möchte. Schön, das jetzt endlich auch mal auf CD zu haben, und die 8 Tracks der Downtempo CD haben auch etwas, auch wenn man sich stellenweise nicht ganz sicher ist, ob sie als 12"es ähnlich viel bewegen könnten wie Highgrade sonst. Sollte man vielleicht eher als Bonbon betrachten.
